******** Initial Setup for Windows ******** 1. Download the Second Life installer from http://secondlife.com. 2. Open the installer and install the Second Life client on the Flash drive. You need about 100MB free space. You will now have a folder named SecondLife on your Flash drive. 3. Copy the RunSL.bat file into the same place as the SecondLife folder. This is critical. 4. When in a Penn State CLC Public Lab, open the RunSL.bat file to launch Second Life. Follow the prompts that appear. Ignore any "out of space" messages. 5. When you close Second Life, again follow the prompts. ******** More Information on What's Happening Here ******** The batch script named RunSL.bat will launch Second Life. When SL is closed, it will delete the Second Life temp directory that is stored on the C: drive in the Documents and Settings folder. This will keep the PSU labs at UP from forcing the user to manually delete these files, as the user's file storage space quota is exceeded when Second Life runs. Second Life runs fine without these temp files. For this script to work, the folder containing the Second Life application (SecondLife) must be in the same directory as this script. You cannot change the name of the Second Life folder, or the names of anything inside the Second Life folder. Note: The file you download from http://secondlife.com is NOT Second Life, it's the installer for Second Life. You must open this installer and follow the directions to install the actual Second Life program. ******** Updates to Second Life ******** Second Life is frequently updated. Most of these updates occur on Wednesday mornings from 9 AM - 3 PM EST. During this time, Second Life is unavailable. When Second Life becomes available again, you often must update the Second Life client on your Flash drive. If you launch Second Life and must update it, you can try to follow the directions Second Life provides. Make sure you have enough free space on your Flash drive (~100MB) to perform a successful update. Note: You cannot install an update in a Penn State CLC lab; you must do so on a personal machine. If for some reason Second Life cannot "automatically" update itself, delete the "old" SecondLife folder on your Flash drive, download the "new" Second Life (from http://secondlife.com) installer directly onto the Flash drive (~70MB), and install Second Life again. Do not do anything to the RunSL.bat file.
