OK - here's a great article that defines the direction virtual worlds are heading towards in the near future. It also lists some concerns and possibilities.
My takeaways?
- We will have many more virtual worlds by the end of 2008.
- Second Life will face massive competition from companies that have (hopefully) learned from their mistakes. Will Linden Lab be up to the challenge of retooling and opening up it's magic box?
- Corporations will continue to invest in this arena.
- Governments will start to come to grips with the legal issues.
We face a period of explosive growth and painful yet needed attempts to integrate these spaces into our societies. Wake up and smell the avatar!

decentralized virtual worlds?
Should there be more virtual worlds, or just one virtual world made up of many different providers? I think in someways second life sees themselves as a platform provider. If I am Dell, and I want to conduct business in a virtual world, won't I want that to run that on my own machines?
I don't know. Just a thought. Don't know if an open system could catch on over something closed these days. IM has been big for over a decade now, and still people choose one of a handful of central services over a decentralized system like jabber.
One World to Rule Them All....
I think what we'll see is many worlds, with some way to move between them (with your avatar). The demands of the market make it impossible to have one world that fits all. IBM and others are working on interoperability standards for this.
